Essence – cosmic engine

Essence - Comic Engine

A journey into the creation of a corner of the universe

🌌 Introduction – A project brought back to life

Hello everyone,
today we’d like to share something very important with you.

We’ve decided to pick up a project that started over 10 years ago, one that stayed in a drawer for a long time but was never truly forgotten.
That project is called Essence – Cosmic Engine.

This is not just a nostalgic reboot: today we have more experience, a clearer vision, and—most importantly—the determination to finally bring it to completion.

🪐 What is Essence – Cosmic Engine

Essence – Cosmic Engine is a cosmic sandbox game that blends physical simulation, god game mechanics, management-style progression.

The goal is to give players complete creative freedom to build their own corner of the cosmos.

The journey starts small: a single star, then a planetary system, planets, moons, asteroids, eventually expanding to a cosmic scale.

Every celestial body interacts with others through real physical rules, starting with gravity—but not limited to it. Creating is simple; maintaining balance is the real challenge.

🌠 A living, evolving cosmos

The cosmos in Essence is not static.

It follows clear rules:

  • gravitation

  • stellar evolution

  • complex interactions between celestial bodies

The player acts almost like a cosmic deity:
creating worlds, observing chain reactions, managing fragile equilibria, and guiding the growth of their system.

As the game progresses, players gain access to new tools and new types of celestial bodies, increasingly large, complex, and exotic, introducing dynamics inspired by:

  • light management games

  • incremental / idle mechanics

🎮 The many sides of Essence

Essence is born from the fusion of several genres:

  1. Sandbox
Total freedom: create, destroy, modify, and experiment without rigid objectives.
This is the game’s dominant soul.

  2. Simulation
The cosmos follows coherent physical rules that define how celestial bodies interact and evolve over time.

  3. God Game
The player observes and influences complex systems from above, managing balances and chain reactions.

  4. Management / Incremental
A gradual progression that accompanies the player as new possibilities are unlocked, without breaking the creative flow.

  5. Creative Builder
Free construction and design of a personal cosmic system, with strong focus on aesthetics and experimentation.

🚀 Why Essence

Essence is the kind of project that allows us to fully express our creativity, drawing from topics that have always fascinated us: simulation, astrophysics, complex systems.

We want to create a game that is:

  • beautiful to look at

  • engaging to play

  • deep without being overwhelming

Essence was born as a garage project many years ago but was never completed, mainly due to lack of time.
In the meantime, our team grew, evolved, and worked on other projects to sustain itself.

Now the decision has been made:

Essence will finally see the light of day!

We don’t have a precise release date yet, but we know it will happen.

🛠️ Technical choices

Essence is being developed with Unity and will be released on PC via Steam (Windows at launch, macOS under evaluation).

Unity is a tool we know deeply and trust. It gives us:

  • a flexible environment

  • a modern programming language

  • a solid pipeline for visually polished results

We’re still evaluating some details, but our current plan is to use the URP (Universal Render Pipeline), combined with:

  • custom shaders

  • post-processing

  • dedicated VFX

🧪 The present: where we are now

At this stage, we’ve decided to rewrite a large part of the simulation logic.

We’re working on:

  • N-body simulation

  • heavy parallelization of calculations

  • handling a large number of celestial bodies

All while preserving performance and visual quality.

On the visual side, we’re pushing further than before, fully embracing the capabilities of modern GPUs.
Gameplay mechanics, on the other hand, remain largely faithful to the original vision, with a few targeted refinements.

At the same time, we’ve started working on communication:

  • the final title

  • the logo

  • the visual identity

Essence needs to start looking like Essence.

🧭 Development roadmap

The path we envision is the following:

  1. Creation of a playable alpha

  2. Release on Steam in Early Access

  3. Crowdfunding campaign

  4. Final release on Steam

Possible future extensions:
  • mobile and/or VR versions

  • advanced planetary editing tools

  • mechanics allowing direct influence over life on planets

💬 A devlog open to the community

This devlog starts from a clear idea:
we don’t want to work in isolation

We’ll share:

  • progress

  • challenges

  • mistakes

  • interesting solutions

We’d love to build Essence together with the community, making players an active part of the creative process.

🔗 Join the community

We’ve opened a Discord server dedicated to Essence – Cosmic Engine, where we share updates, previews, and openly discuss development decisions.

If you’d like to follow the project more closely, exchange ideas with us, or simply observe how a cosmic sandbox takes shape step by step, you’re more than welcome.
